ABOUT 200 people in Tabataba, Ba, who do not have access to piped water will be assisted with access from boreholes. This was the word from Tabataba-Nukuloa advisory councillor Mukesh Chand.

The Tabataba Village and surrounding areas water issues were highlighted in this newspaper yesterday and a survey of the area uncovered residents using water from contaminated boreholes and streams used by livestock.

Mr Chand said he was aware of the issue and has been tasked with obtaining the names and details of the households and to hand this information to the District Office Ba.

“We had a meeting at the DO’s office last week and they have asked me to obtain information about the people affected,” he said.

“During the meeting we were informed that it’s easier to give the residents boreholes.

“And this is because the Government dam that supplies water there is situated lower than the affected areas, so it would be very hard to get water from the dam to those areas.”

Harbans Singh, a resident of Tabataba, said he had received a number of calls from concerned family members living abroad after the issue was highlighted in The Fiji Times.

“We just need access to water that is safe, clean and not too far to get to,” he said.

Water sources in Ba and Tavua are drying up and residents in affected areas claim that existing boreholes and waterways being used to source supply for daily needs are contaminated because livestock use the same areas for bathing and drinking.
