The Walk on Work Strong (WOWS) Kids Fiji Foundation has received a contribution of $20,000 from BSP Financial Group Ltd on Saturday, along with an early Christmas lunch and a heart-warming gift-giving ceremony for the children and their families.
Rajeshwar Singh, BSP’s relieving country head and chief financial officer, described the event as a much-anticipated annual tradition for the bank and a significant component of BSP’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, particularly as the country’s leading financial institution.
“As one of the foundation’s long-standing partners, we’ve supported WOWS since its inception,” Mr Singh said.
“It’s crucial for us to stay actively involved in our community and uphold our responsibilities as a bank. Being the number one bank carries the honour of serving communities like this one.”
Reflecting on the year, Mr Singh acknowledged the heartbreaking loss of 20 children who had attended last year’s event but expressed gratitude for the 26 new children supported by the foundation in 2024.
“We mourn the loss of those who are no longer with us, but we also celebrate the 26 new faces here today. We pray for the souls who have passed and for those who are still fighting this battle,” he said.
Singh acknowledged the resilience of parents and the pivotal role of organisations such as WOWS in supporting families coping with childhood cancer.
“The diagnosis is an immense shock, not only to the children but to their entire families. It’s a heavy burden that strains resources and well-being,” he said.
“That’s why it’s so important for us to support organisations like WOWS Kids, which provide relief to families during such trying times.”
He expressed deep appreciation for the parents’ sacrifices and their tireless efforts to care for their children.
“The lengths parents go to, the sacrifices they make, all with the hope of seeing their children get better, are truly remarkable,” Mr Singh said.
He also encouraged the public to contribute to such humanitarian causes, no matter how small.
“Whatever you have, share in whatever way you can.”
WOWS Kids Fiji trustee Anabel Ali expressed heartfelt gratitude to supporters for their ongoing commitment to the cause.
“Many of these children spend a large part of their time unwell, either at home or in hospitals,” Ms Ali explained.
“For them to receive gifts and experience moments like today (Saturday) is incredibly special. It brings so much joy to them, and it’s truly uplifting.”
She thanked BSP and all supporters for their invaluable assistance.
“As a developing non-profit organisation, our resources are often limited, so this kind of support makes a significant difference in the work we do,” Ms Ali said.
“We are deeply grateful for the generosity shown today (Saturday).”
