National coach Ben Gollings expects Sireli Maqala and Aminiasi Tuimaba to add firepower to Team Fiji men’s rugby 7s quest for a historic first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Both players have been roped in from the 15s code having represented their respective club in France earlier this season.

Gollings said the players had been targeted for their experience in the abbreviated code.”

Maqala obviously left post 2020 Olympics and has been playing 15s club rugby for Bayonne very well,” he said.

“In fact he was somebody we always targeted for his experience and his capability on the 7s field.

“The good thing about both of these players is that they love and want to play 7s and have kept themselves in good condition.

“They have been great additions. For us, as management and coaching staff, we weren’t trying to target too many 15s players to disrupt what has been a good start to our program.

“These players give us some strength and depth in positions where we are still developing players. Tuimaba has been working really hard and he is looking really sharp which is great.”
