LABASA walloped an under strength Nadi outfit 5-0 in the Courts Inter District Championship premier division semi-final at Prince Charles Park yesterday to book a spot in this afternoon’s final.

The Nadi Football Association made a stern decision to suspend several key players for allegedly going on a drinking spell following the 1-0 victory against Nasinu in their last group match on Thursday which had guaranteed the side a spot in
yesterday’s semi-final.

The Nadi FA suspended Ame Votoniu, Patrick Joseph, Josefata Malakai, Jone Ralulu, Vuniuci Tikomaimereke, Christopher Kumar, Husseni Khan and Mataiasi Toma for their actions.

The decision obviously had an adverse effect as the superior Babasiga Lions overpowered the hosts.

Ilisoni Logaivau opened Labasa’s account through a header in the 36th minute after a communication lapse between defender Aisake Kedraika and Vereti Dickson as they both went for cross from the right flank and missed the ball.

This set the platform for the Northerners’ onslaught.

Ashnil Raju scored the second goal on the stroke of halftime.

Antonio Tuivuna got the third in the 49th minute while Logaivou recorded his double in the 68th minute.

Referee Veer Singh awarded Labasa a late penalty which was slotted in by goalkeeper Akuila Mateisuva.

Labasa coach Ronil Lal said they were happy with the result since they played according to their game plan.

He said their plan was to maintain possession and play through the flanks out wide.

“We capitalised on that and hats off to the boys,” Lal said.

“We wish to thank all our sponsors that have supported us all the way.”
