As the new school year starts tomorrow, parents and students in Lautoka were out in the weekend doing stationery and uniform shopping.

A single mother, Asenaca Ratudradra, told this newspaper the $200 back-to-school assistance was not enough because of the rising cost of uniforms, books, and stationery.

“In past years school books were affordable but for this year, prices have slightly increased,” she said.

“I have only one child who will be in Year 11 this year, and the $200 is not enough for my expenses.

“I would have to fork out another $200 to $400 worth of shopping for school stuff.”

Ms Ratudradra said she had been selling vegetables at the Lautoka market to support her son’s school expenses.
