THE national 7s team management will review its participation at the 34th Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s last weekend with plans to look at the viability of participating in other club tournaments apart from the Fiji Rugby Union Super Sevens Series.

The Fiji shadow teams, Fiji Warriors and Fiji Barbarians featured in the two-day event eventually ending up in the cup final.

Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber said his players were tested in the tournament, especially on the outfields at Prince Charles Park which were a bit smaller than the main pitch.

“In these tournaments, there are big numbers of teams,” Baber said.

“We have played nine games this weekend and had to really prepare mentally for it. However, this does not necessarily prepare us for six games in two days which obviously will be at the Tokyo Olympics.”

Baber said his sole aim this year was really to look at how the Fiji team was going to perform in six games over two days.

“So we will take a view on that as the management staff and say what we got out from Nawaka.

“We played in a 16-team tournament in the World Rugby Sevens Series. It is only 12 teams at the Olympics.

“But I think the 16-team tournaments are a lot closer to what the Olympics will have.”
