NADI Aviators rugby league players Roela Radiniyavuni and Jiowana Sauto are just few steps away from becoming the first Fijian female to feature at the NRL competition.

The former Fijiana 7s reps departed the country last week to join the Vodafone Warriors NRL Women’s side for final trials selection to determine their squad for the 2019 NRL Holden Women’s Premiership.

Roela, who is also a member of the Fiji Womens Rugby League 9s squad will fight for a spot in the backline. She is a utility backline player who plays equally well at centre, wing and fullback.

Jiowana, a former Fijiana 7s and 15s rep will compete in the second row.

A powerful ball runner and will be best tested against top competition from the local Kiwis and Australian players for a spot in their second row department.

Bsynergie Sports Management Athlete Welfare Manager Jacquelin Williams Shannon said the company liaised with Warriors management to give both players the opportunity to trial after impressive performances in local and international tournaments over the past 12 months.

“Roela and Jiowana thoroughly deserve this opportunity and we are confident that this opportunity is one that can pave way for more openings for our local women,” said Shannon.

“The ladies are extremely excited to be part of these trials as they know they will be up against some of the world’s best league players and welcome the challenge to prove themselves. What better competition than the NRL!”

The players will return to Fiji after the trials whilst waiting for the announcement of the Vodafone Warriors squad for 2019.
