Preliminary investigations have begun to determine the cause of an oil spill within the parameters of the Suva Harbour, particularly at the Narain Jetty, yesterday afternoon.
The oil spill report was received by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) and the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL).
According to MSAF, as of yesterday afternoon, oil spill booms were deployed and have been effective in containing the spill from spreading to other areas of the jetty.
The authority stated that the swift response by the pollution officers from the two organisations resulted in the containment of the Tier 1 spill.
“Preliminary investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the spill, and necessary actions will be taken against the responsible individual or company,” MSAF stated.
“The Department of Environment and Water Police have been informed in regards to the incident and are assisting MSAF and FPCL with this investigation.”
