Fiji’s radar | FRU TARGETS ALL BLACKS, WALLABIES AND SA FOR TESTS

The Fiji Rugby Union is already mapping plans for more Test matches for the Flying Fijians, three years out from the 2027 men’s Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Fiji Rugby Union interim chair Peter Mazey revealed there are intentions of playing a Test match against 2023 World Cup winners, South Africa, the All Blacks and Wallabies.

“It’s interesting because major games are generally made many years in advance now.

“We are hoping to get a South African Test here but that will be just before the World Cup in Australia 2027, and we start working on that now.

“We would like to, next year, look at Australia and New Zealand but there is a number of other teams coming up too, so we just have to wait and see but the decisions are all made,” Mazey said in an interview with this newspaper.

So far this year, the Flying Fijians have played Georgia and the All Blacks in the July Test window.

They have three more Tests coming up in the November window against Scotland, Ireland and Wales which will all be played in the Northern hemisphere.

The chances of hosting an international Test of major interest in Fiji are slim.

“We only have a small Test window, so the Test window is only about three or four Saturdays in July of each year and then the Northern Test window when we head North so we just cross our fingers and pray that we can get some here.

“We need a stadium that can cater for 30,000 people and its obvious that should be in the West because the new rules are it has to be close to an airport, has to be close to five-star hotels so I’m certainly one to encourage the Government to look at how we can build a 30,000-seat stadium in the West,” he added.

Next up for the Flying Fijians before the November window is the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup which is set to kick-off on August 23.

Fiji will play Samoa in its first Pool A match at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
