AN assessment on the impact of Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations (PACER) Plus on the Fijian economy is currently underway.

This has been confirmed by the Minister for Industry and Trade, Premila Kumar during an interview outside Parliament.

“We are carrying out an impact assessment on this regional trade agreement. At the moment we are waiting for a consultant to help us in this,” she said.

Mrs Kumar said the problem Fiji doesn’t have enough experts to carry out researches in areas of such agreements.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marise Payne said they are hopeful Fiji would come on board in being part of the agreement.

According to the Australian Government department of foreign affairs and trade, the PACER Plus was a regional development centred trade agreement.

It is a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) covering goods, services and investment.

So far, Australia, New Zealand and nine Pacific island countries, excluding Fiji.
