Allegations that inmate Tevita Qaqanivalu sent text messages containing vulgar language directed at the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice have emerged as a key factor behind the cancellation of his family visit and a wider investigation now underway within the Fiji Corrections Service.
Acting Commissioner of Corrections, Auta Moceisuva, confirmed that Qaqanivalu does not qualify for a family visit, citing ongoing disciplinary concerns and non-compliance with prison regulations.
“Tevita Qaqanivalu does not qualify for family visit due to his constant misbehavior and uncooperative attitude towards lawful authority,” Moceisuva said.
“The investigation is also linked to the alleged text messages of vulgarism directed towards the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice,” he said.
The alleged messages have raised serious concerns within the Corrections Service, particularly around the possible use of a mobile phone by a prisoner, which would constitute a breach of prison rules and security protocols.
While the Acting Commissioner did not confirm the outcome of the investigation, he said the matter is being treated seriously and will be handled in accordance with Corrections policies and due process.
