Akbar apologises for late pay increment

MINISTER for Education, Heritage and Arts Rosy Akbar has openly apologised to teachers for the late payment of their pay increment.

While addressing participants at the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) 85th Annual Delegates Conference in Suva yesterday, Ms Akbar said the ministry was taking its time because it was yet to complete its assessment.

She said payments to teachers would be made once the ministry completed its assessment.

“You can be rest assured that for those who had performed beyond expectations, whatever the criteria was, you will be paid based on your performance,” Ms Akbar said.

“If I may take this opportunity to put on record my apology for any inconvenience it may have caused.”

FTA president Netani Druavesi said the reform was also removing those who were once teachers and had other relevant office qualifications and experiences from the Ministry of Education headquarters.

“Their previous experiences as teachers help HQ to make rational decisions also in negotiating win-win decisions for teachers and MOE,” Mr Druavesi said.

The conference continues today.
