Mutu Colo Oka! For many, the “Raluve Trophy” victory on August 23, 2025 might seem like just another trophy or day of execution of God-given talents for young women in rugby. But in the province of Serua, this victory is something for its history books.
In a stunning upset that had the whole province of Serua buzzing, Ratu Latianara College’s U16 rugby clinched the 2025 Weet-Bix Raluve U16 title, etching their name in the history books.
The victory, a nail-biting 12-10 win against defending champions Sigatoka Methodist College — wasn’t just a win — it was a testament to grit, belief, and the unwavering support of the community.
Ratu Latianara College, a small school that rests along the Queens Rd, draws students from 12 villages and two districts in the Serua Province.
Named after their chieftain, Ratu Latianara na turaga na vunivalu, the school has always enjoyed the backing of its namesake na turaga na vunivalu Ratu Tevita Latianara constant presence at their games added an extra layer of inspiration for the team.
The atmosphere at the HFC National Stadium in Suva was electric. As the clock ticked down, tension mounted. With seconds remaining, Nanise Donumaitoga burst through the defense to score the decisive try.
The crowd erupted, a mix of cheers and tears as Ratu Latianara snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
“This is my final year with the U16s, and to win like this is just amazing,” said a tearful Captain Jennifer Vakataleqica.
“We dedicate this win to our parents, who supported us throughout, even when we were away at school for weeks.”
Their journey was far from easy. Overcoming challenges like lack of equipment, the team embraced simplicity.
“We had no gym, no fancy training gear,” Coach Ratu Kuriyalavou explained.
“So, we went back to basics, training on the sand dunes, lifting logs. It was all about humbleness and hard work.”
This resilience is particularly notable considering the challenges faced by rural schools, such as limited resources, infrastructure.
The victory is more than just a sporting achievement. It’s a symbol of hope and inspiration for young girls in Serua.
“These girls are not just the future of rugby — they are change-makers,” a school spokesperson said.
“Their story is a reminder that with belief and hard work, anything is possible.”
Etuate Honda former Fiji rep shared his sentiments.
“Their win was a result of their commitment to God and their training, teamwork, and respect for their coach and also for each other, which they had learned from one of greatest rugby players of Fiji, Mr Gusuivalu commonly known as “Honda” in and out of the rugby field.”
The celebrations continued long into the night, with villagers tuning-in through the Walesi platform to witness the historic moment. And the accolades keep coming — four players from the team have been selected for the Fiji school girls rugby team.
The selection is a testament to the talent and potential within Ratu Latianara College, these players will have the opportunity to represent their school and country on a larger stage, further inspiring young girls in Fiji.
Ratu Latianara’s win is a reminder that greatness can come from anywhere, and that the power of community, belief, and hard work can overcome any obstacle. Community support plays a vital role in the success of schools in Fiji.
With the Raluve trophy now at home of Ratu Latianara this makes it the first-ever school in the Southern Zone to take this trophy.
