Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says 43 villages have been identified in Fiji for relocation to higher ground.

He made this comment while responding to query from MP Viam Pillay on the update of the Fiji National University –Monash University Joint Pacific Island Countries Climate Change Research Centre in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said in order to mitigate the staggering risks and preparing for the impacts that would actually occur irrespective of the scale of global emissions achieved over the next decade, Government needed to develop solutions.

“We need to actively participate in the science, the research, the innovation, the legal issues and an enquiry that will help define solutions that suit our context and indeed our needs,” he said.

“The basis of policies we create, plan and we put in place must be shaped by the evidence and the depth of analysis that helps ensure we create the answers to the right questions.

“The MOU which was signed last week sets out the basis for a progressive joint Monash-FNU Pacific Island Countries Climate Change Research Centre. “This is a partnership which will further complement the efforts of the existing research pursuits and institutions in the region. While helping to advance the knowledge and information we need to better confront the evolving climate crisis.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the partnership would be led by a group of experts and experience of Pacific Islanders.

“Ensuring its work is grounded in the context and challenges we seek to address.”
