FIJI created history last Saturday after winning its first-ever gold medal in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) competition held in Australia.
Representing the country proudly, Rupe Guyot showcased outstanding skill and determination, competing in two fights and securing victory through two impressive submissions.
His achievement marks a significant milestone for Fiji in the growing martial art sport.
Coach Andre Olivera could not hide his pride in Guyot’s achievement.
“I’m very proud of Rupe and want to share this with the team.
“Rupe won The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) competition in Australia yesterday, the sport’s largest international organization.
“Two fights, two submissions — that is impressive. Thank you Juan Jose Muñoz and everyone for helping him prepare,” Olivera said.
Olivera added that he hopes Guyot’s success will inspire more Fijians to take up the sport.
“I hope his victory inspires more adults to come training,” he added.
Guyot’s win not only brings pride to Fiji but also shines a spotlight on the potential of local athletes in international martial arts competitions.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art where two competitors try to gain a dominant position over one another to force a submission, like a choke or joint lock.
Often described as “physical chess,” the sport emphasizes technique and leverage over raw strength, allowing a smaller person to subdue a larger, stronger opponent.
