A 21-YEAR-OLD convicted of threatening a woman with a steel pipe before stealing her motor vehicle and mobile phone has had his 21-month jail term suspended for three years.

Isikeli Tawake had pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated burglary and theft committed on July 23 this year.

Tawake, according to court records, trespassed into the home of Shweta Singh, armed with a steel pipe, where he threatened her and stole the items. As per his presentence report, Tawake was under the influence of alcohol when he broke into the victim’s home,

He had done some task for the victim’s husband and felt cheated when he failed to pay Tawake.

Tawake said his time spent in custody had helped him reflect on the negative impact of his behaviour. Justice Lee James Burney has also issued a community-based order on the basis that a period of supervision in the community would promote his rehabilitation.

“If you are not able to comply with the conditions of the order, you may apply to the court and the court may deal with you in a different way,” ruled Justice Burney on September 30.

He has 30 days to appeal to the Appellate Court.
