As Fiji marks 55 years of independence, the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) joins all Fijians in celebrating the enduring spirit of our nation — one founded on unity, compassion, and resilience. This anniversary is a moment not only of pride but of gratitude — for the people, values, and institutions that continue to hold our country together.
In this spirit, FCOSS offers ten reasons to be grateful as we look to the future with hope and humility:
1. Grateful for the Spirit of Collaboration
Across villages, settlements, and towns, we are reminded of how our people come together to respond to need — showing that collective care remains our strongest social safety net. FCOSS especially commends community volunteers who stepped in during the multiple crises of the pandemic, cyclones, and climate change, when government services were stretched. They are the true embodiment of the spirit of collaboration — rendering support without financial reward, driven only by the desire to see their communities recover.
2. Grateful for the Commitment of Our Civil Service
Through natural disasters, health emergencies, and economic challenges, many civil servants have continued to serve with dedication. Despite the hurdles they face, their quiet persistence keeps essential systems running for the good of all.
3. Grateful for the Bonds that Define Us — Veitokani, Veiwekani, Veinanumi, and Veivakaturagataki
These enduring values embody who we are as Fijians — respectful, compassionate, and guided by shared responsibility toward one another. The challenges of pandemics, the drug crisis, and climate change must never cast doubt on our ability to uphold these values; instead, they should strengthen our resolve to defend our people and communities from these threats.
4. Grateful for the Wisdom of Our Elders
Our elders carry stories, knowledge, and values that shape our communities. Gratitude compels us to ensure their voices are heard and reflected in our national and community plans. Their twilight years must be marked by dignity — for it is our duty to give back the care they once gave to us. On their shoulders we stand.
5. Grateful for the Space We Hold for Women and Young People
When women and youth are empowered to lead and participate fully, our nation becomes more inclusive, creative, and just. Their resilience is the gift we pass on to the future of Fiji.
6. Grateful for the Gift — and Responsibility — of Our Vanua
Stewardship is not an option; it is our duty. Only if we protect our land, seas, and natural resources will there be abundance for generations to come. And our future generations are not waiting on the sidelines — they are already standing up for their right to inherit a sustainable future.
While Fiji has had its share of dark days, our commitment to overcome religious intolerance has endured. The freedom to worship and the respect we extend to others’ beliefs reflect the moral strength that continues to anchor Fiji in times of uncertainty.
We are grateful for the persistence and courage of civil society and other national stakeholders who, despite political upheavals, coups, and periods of restriction, have worked to nurture democracy through intentional participation, open dialogue, and accountability — reminding authorities that every voice matters.
We have faced storms, loss, and uncertainty — yet we rise. With timely support and compassionate response, our communities continue to rebuild and find a way forward.
Through every trial and triumph, our love for Fiji remains constant. FCOSS reaffirms its commitment: we will be here for Fiji — always Fiji.
As we celebrate 55 years of independence, may humble gratitude guide our leadership, our service, and our shared vision for a nation that leaves no one behind.
