THE Fiji senior women’s football team missed several chances in the third-place playoff, falling 0-2 to Samoa at the OFC Women’s Nations Cup 2025 at HFC Bank Stadium yesterday.

Despite controlling much of the game and dominating possession, the Fiji Kulas was unable to convert their opportunities into goals.

Samoa took full advantage, scoring two early goals to secure their best-ever finish in the tournament.

Kula’s coach Angeline Chua said the team must be honest about where they are falling short.

“Look at the results. You know we of course, we have to be honest with ourselves that we are not, you know, doing well, letting goals in and yeah,” she said.

“You know chasing the same is not the way to win the game.”

Chua made several changes during the game to try and spark a comeback, bringing fresh players onto the field.

However, Fiji struggled to break through Samoa’s defence.

The loss was especially tough for Fiji as they played in front of their home supporters.

When asked what went wrong after conceding two early goals, Chua admitted the team struggled to focus.

“It’s a little bit hard to just focus. You see it’s hard to explain you know the focus of the players, like yeah. Sometimes bad things just happen.”

Samoa’s victory marks a historic moment for their team, achieving third place, their highest-ever finish in the OFC Women’s Nations Cup, improving on their fourth place in 2022.

Chua said building depth remains a priority moving forward.

“We are looking for the players for the under-16 and the under-19 team. So, you know they are the next generation of players,” she said.

She also thanked fans who continued to support the team despite the tough results

“Thank you. you know it’s not the result that we wanted back home, but hopefully we still are able to put out a nice like character of the team for the fans.”
