Fiji is among the slowest countries in the region when it comes to issuing building permits, according to the National Fire Authority.
NFA official Joel Israel says it currently takes up to 141 days to secure a building permit.
“We’ve been challenged by the deputy prime minister to reduce that to 70 days,” he said, adding they were working to address the issue.
“Our team is committed to this goal.”
As part of efforts, Mr Israel said, they were shifting to a digital system for building permit applications.
“This requires updates to standard operating procedures, as well as new equipment, staff training and improved methods of operation.”
He said these would help reduce waiting times and improve overall service delivery in the construction sector.
