LAND has been identified in the West for the development of Fiji’s medicinal cannabis industry, according to Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica.
Mr Kamikamica said investors had already begun scouting locations.
“I know some of the investors have been looking in the West,” he said.
“I’m not sure if any have looked in the North, but definitely on the western side of Viti Levu, there have been some discussions.”
He said while some investors were seeking government assistance, many were actively searching for land on their own.
“Just like with Fiji Water investors, they will look for themselves and decide where they want to build their plants.”
He said the only thing holding back the industry now was the completion of the legal framework.
“We’re just working on the legislation right now. That’s the only thing left before we start the industry. Cabinet has approved everything else.”
He said the delay was because of the need to ensure proper safety measures.
“We need to make sure that safety is paramount in this industry.”
He said they did not want any leakage to occur after the industry had been established.
