THE Ministry of Education has introduced a prayer and fasting initiative in schools, with the aim to have “a productive teaching workforce through divine intervention”, reveals a circular issued by the acting permanent secretary, Meli Nacuva. He states the initiative is in due respect to the diverse denomination and beliefs.
The ministry has directed all heads of schools to allocate a specific time and day for fasting and prayer in all schools across Fiji.
“The purpose of this initiative is to empower a productive teaching workforce through divine intervention in alignment to Section 22 of the 2013 Constitution of the Fiji Islands,” states Mr Nacuva in the circular.
He says this initiative is also related to the Strategic Outcomes under Thematic Areas 2 and 3 of the Denarau Declaration and Section 4 of the Fiji National Curriculum Framework under Spiritual and Values Education.
“All heads of schools and staff members are encouraged to allocate a day of the week of their choice and dedicate it to prayer and fasting.
“This should be reflected in the school timetable.
“Fasting is encouraged to be observed until midday. Students are exempted unless they show interest. Prayers can be integrated into the school’s existing devotion and or quiet time program where applicable.”
