Tender to remove sunken ship and cargo

A TENDER for the removal of the MV Southern Phoenix and its remaining cargo have been advertised and operation is expected to start soon, says the Maritime and Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF).

MSAF chief executive officer John Tunidau said recovery operation on the ship was completed on June 1, 2017.

“MSAF and the Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd and the shipowner will continue to monitor the site for any sign of oil spillage if any, to ensure that all safety measures are taken to protect Fiji’s marine environment,” he said.

Mr Tunidau said the oil extraction and recovery operation was completed by the salvage company Ardent under close supervision by MSAF’s pollution team and FPCL.

He added deployed oil spill booms would be kept in place until the removal of cargoes attached to the ship and the ship itself commenced

All valves from tanks have been closed as an added precaution.
