Eighty-three students were selected to be prefects at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Primary School this year.
MGM Primary School head-teacher Narendra Rao said there were 46 school prefects, four senior prefects and 33 students selected as class prefects.
He said it was the first for the school to induct school prefects from Year 6 because they wanted to give the opportunity to their Year 6 students to take up leadership responsibilities.
“The school prefects have different backgrounds and the head boy and head girl have been chosen according to their capabilities, their academic achievement and responsibilities over the years,” he said.
Head girl Jashika Janish Lal of Nakasi said she was proud to be selected as the school’s head girl.
“I was happy when I was selected deputy-head girl of the school last year and this year is an even bigger accomplishment for me,” she said.
“I thank everyone who has given me this opportunity especially the teachers and I know that my parents and my family are extremely proud of this achievement.”
Head boy Pradnesh Kumar of Nakasi said he was excited when he heard about the news.
“My journey at the school since Year 1 has been exciting and I’ve learned so much over the years and I hope to help teachers and students with my new role as head-boy,” he said.
The prefects were reminded to lead by example especially through the good teachings and principles of the late Mahatma Gandhi.
