The Fiji Police Force has been allocated $184.3million in the 2021-2022 national budget.
Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum made the announcement while delivering the national budget tonight and says the Government will continue to ensure that our security forces are well equipped to keep Fijians safe.
“The Fiji Police Force is one of the only few divisions of Government where additional new recruitment will be allowed,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
“We are counting on our police to see our COVID-safe health measures enforced nationwide – lives depend on it, so they must be staffed appropriately,” he said.
Of the allocated budget, $152.4million is for operating expenditure and $27.9million for capital expenditure.
“This includes funding for 328 positions: promotion of 158 police officers and recruitment of 82 new police officers, 78 special constables, seven civilian officers, and three Government wage earners,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
“The Government will continue to fund the construction of new police stations, currently underway in Nakasi, Nadi, Lautoka and Nalawa,” he said.
He adds $25million has been allocated for the ongoing construction of police stations, which will expand the reach of law enforcement to Fijians living in the Central and Western divisions.
“An additional $1million is allocated for renovation, extension, and upgrade of existing police posts.”
