THE Ba Zone primary schools athletics team is embarking on maintaining a stronghold in the field events of this week’s FMF Chow Games at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
Ba will be represented by 126 athletes who had been selected from 19 schools. Team executive Eroni Navunicagi said geographical locations between schools and financial constraints were some factors that affected their preparations.
“From 43 primary schools in Ba, 19 schools participated in having their students for the Chow Games,” Navunicagi said.
“We face issues such as the locations of schools and the financial difficulties some schools face. These contributed to the less number of schools participating in the games.
“Nevertheless we have been training hard and our students are looking forward to the competition. We are not expecting a lot from the games, but this is one of the best opportunities for our children to participate in and expose their sporting talents.
“We will let them enjoy the day at the games. It will be a bonus if we win medals. What is important is the students to enjoy themselves in the games.
“We are concentrating on preparing our athletes for the field events because the sprints will be dominated by Suva and urban schools. They have the resources compared to us. We have 62 girls, 64 boys and 27 teachers for the games.”
The team will arrive in Suva tomorrow.
