TRAVELLERS to and from Labasa can expect a significantly improved experience as the Labasa Airport upgrade project progresses, with a target completion date nearing despite recent adjustments.

The observation by Fiji Airports Ltd CEO Mesake Nawari came in response to queries from the Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs and Defence member Vhirendra Lal after the presentation of Fiji Airports Ltd’s 2022 annual report to the committee.

“The original investment is costing us $18.6million, so that’s all Fiji Airports funds because the World Bank support is only mostly for other areas of upgrades, improvements at the airport,” he said.

Mr Nawari stressed the upgrades were crucial to accommodate the shift from smaller aircraft to ATRs and the increasing number of international visitors with heavy luggage.

“We’re looking at that, and that might push the completion date for a couple of months,” Mr Nawari explained, referencing new requests that emerged post-groundbreaking.”

He said these additions include expanding the carpark, creating space for rental cars and establishing commercial amenities such as a coffee place, all aimed at enhancing passenger comfort in Labasa’s climate.

“So, quite a big investment.

“Otherwise, the first stage, if we don’t consider the request that came after the groundbreaking, then it should be completed by the end of June next year.”

Regarding Savusavu, Mr Nawari acknowledged the town’s growth and previous terminal building work, however, he noted the limitations of the current runway.

“Savusavu is operating, and we really cannot land any bigger plane.

“Plans for Savusavu’s future, potentially including a new airport site, are being considered as part of the Na Vualiku tourism development project, with World Bank funding for upgrades.”
