NO ONE should remain silent when it comes to domestic violence, says Methodist Church minister Reverend Mereti Rabonu.
Speaking during the Break the Silence Sunday program at Toga Village in Rewa, Ms Rabonu said in 2003, the Fiji Council of Churches, of which she was a part, agreed to be part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence after noting the ever increasing incidence of domestic violence.
“We organised various activities and awareness programs as part of the 16 Days Activism for the purpose of tackling these issues affecting women and children,” she said.
“This is important because we need to protect our women and children.
“We should not stay quiet, we should not be silent. We need to speak up and fight this act of violence. We need to share the stories of those domestic violence cases.”
Ms Rabonu said the church needed to wake up.
“We need to wake the church to deal with these issues. We need to raise awareness about these issues.
“If your sister or a loved one is facing these issues, come out and tell because enough is enough.
“This is our plea from the church, and these are some messages we want to share because in the church, we should not stay quiet.”
