14 months imprisonment for beating wife

A 52-YEAR-OLD man who pleaded guilty to one count of act with intent to cause grievous harm was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment by the High Court in Suva.
Justice Daniel Goundar while sentencing Mosese Vosa this morning said victims are forced to reconcile due to cultural barriers.
The incident occurred on July 21, 2018 in Lau.
The court heard that the argument arose when Vosa asked his wife of her whereabouts the previous night.
Justice Goundar said Vosa beat his wife several times with a stick and then inflicted more violence on her until she became unconscious.
He said the wife was taken to the health centre by a village nurse.
“In the case of family violence the purpose of a sentence is deterrence as the courts have the duty to protect women and children,” said Justice Goundar.
