Update: 3:30PM THE United States hopes Fiji Human Rights Commission chairperson Dr Shaista Shameem and others would take consideration on the Human Rights Report as a constructive comment.
In response to comments made by Dr Shameem that no one wanted the US to be the guardian of human rights for the rest of the world, US ambassador to Fiji Larry Dinger said fundamental freedom were enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly more than 60 years ago.
He said this declaration urges everyone and every nation to promote human rights and to ensure its observance universally.
Mr Dinger said this was an obligation the US took seriously.
He said it was in that context the Department of State was mandated by the US Congress to produce an annual Human Rights Report on every foreign country.
Mr Dinger said the US had its flaws but its democratic system was accountable and its military always remained subservient to elected civilian leadership.
