SEXUAL crimes against women are still a big problem for Fiji, according to the US State Department's Human Rights Country report released yesterday.
It said rape, domestic abuse, and indecent assault were significant problems.
"The penal code provides for a maximum punishment of life imprisonment for rape, however, most rapes were prosecuted in the magistrate's courts, which have a sentencing limit of 10 years," the report said. "There were inconsistencies in the sentences imposed by different magistrates, generally ranging from one to six years' imprisonment."
Interim Women's Minister Doctor Jiko Luveni said for Fiji to combat such crimes, traditional respect between brothers and sisters should be enhanced.
"I think if that is done in all our homes, our children will also follow that kind of behaviour," she said.
Dr Jiko said the church also played a vital role in preaching and influencing people to be law-abiding citizens with high moral values.
She said alcohol and drug abuse were also factors.
Attempts to get comments from Fiji Women's Crisis Centre co-ordinator Shamima Ali proved futile.
FemLink co-ordinator Sharon Rolls said she would comment later.
