Update: 3.46pm THE Fiji Human Rights Commission (FHRC) is satisfied with a High Court ruling not to allow it intervenor status in the case of ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase, who is challenging interim Prime Minister Commander Voreqe Bainimarama and the military over the 5 December coup.
Instead the court has extended an invitation to the commission to assist the court as 'amicus curiae' or friend of the court in the proceedings which begins on 2 October.
A statement from the FHRC says the court declined the commission's application for intervenor on the basis that no nexus was drawn between investigation of possible human rights abuses and pleadings in the case.
Granting intervenor status would allow the FHRC to examine and cross examine witnesses and lead evidence in this case.
