Police and National Fire Authority officers will travel to Gau Island this week to investigate the cause of fire which burned down a house near Sawaieke Village last month.

While the NFA officers would investigate the cause of the fire, police were expected to question villagers over the incident.

The fire occurred on the night of June 29.

Police spokesman Inspector Atu Sokomuri said a visiting religious group from Suva had been billeted at the house which was allegedly not well received by some villagers.

"From the reports we got some have disagreed about their presence on the island.

"This could have led to the burning of the house," he said.

The house is located between Sawaieke and Navukailagi villages.

It is understood that the house was owned by the Takalai Gau Ratu Marika Lewanavanua who reported the matter to police.
