FOUR hundred bright minds battled it out in the annual Fiji Teachers Union New World primary school quiz competition in Labasa.
Bulileka Primary School retained the trophy of top quizzers in the Class One to Six category while Sangam College was declared the secondary school winner.
The Class One to Eight category was still being fought over between 30 schools from Korotolutolu Primary School in Navidamu, about 150 kilometers outside Labasa, to as far as Nubu in Nadogo yesterday.
The quiz competition is the only time northern schools test their knowledge of the curriculum, general knowledge and sport.
Semesa Vakaotirerega, a Class Eight student of Bucalevu Muslim Primary School said just preparing for the quiz competition allowed him to look up on other information that he didn't usually care about.
"It's just looking at school work and playing games but when I started preparing I realised it's good to be informed about various subjects," he said.
"It exercised my memory powers and I was more informed than I usually am.
"It's given me this desire to keep abreast with information, especially current affairs, whether it is sport or news."
The chairman of the FTU's Labasa branch, Rajesh Chand said competition was in its eighth year and the participant numbers had increased.
"There really isn't much else happening, Viti Levu have their IQ active, this is Vanua Levu's version," he said.
