THE Fiji Sugar Corporation maintains that problems at the Rarawai mill has to do with the boiler and widespread harvesting.
Spokesman, Samuela Railoa issued a statement yesterday saying despite extensive repair-work in the months leading up to the beginning of crushing, the main boiler had developed problems and could not generate sufficient steam for production.
"This is a 31-year-old boiler which was planned to be replaced as part of the cogeneration project and had to be deferred due to inadequate cane production.
"Our engineers are working around the clock to bring about improvement to the performance of the boilers and putting measures into place to ensure adequate steam generation," he said.
Mr Railoa said growers had been harvesting and delivering cane without quota with the expectation that it will be crushed.
This week the Fiji Times reported the frustration of growers, both with and without quota.
The farmers complaints have been mainly to do with long wait associated with mill breakdowns.
The FSC did not respond to requests for milling statistics to do with the tonnes of cane crushed and sugar produced 'TCTS'.
A meeting of stakeholders is scheduled to be held in Ba tomorrow which the FSC says will discuss milling issues and to bring discipline in the harvesting of cane.
