POLICE are cracking down on an illegal syndicate involving the sale of holiday packages to tourists to stay in unlicensed holiday homes in Fiji.
Deputy Northern Police Commander SP Bola Tamanisau confirmed Savusavu police were hot on the trail of several such operations in Cakaudrove.
"We have commenced investigations," he said.
"We have identified homes accommodating tourists but they do not have a licence from the Hotel and Licensing Board," he said.
Some tourists have already been questioned.
The owners of some of the homes reside overseas and their properties are managed by a caretaker.
The police say the syndicate operates by advertising on their websites or other websites claiming to be legitimate operations offering the best of Fiji from white sandy beaches, native bush rock pools and waterfalls.
Also on offer were activities like bush hikes and snorkelling.
The website further quotes prices for a week's stay which can range between $600 to $1,000 Fijian along with the name of a contact who resides overseas.
"But we have confirmed that several don't have any license at all so that makes their operation illegal."
"The sale is made overseas while tourists come and enjoy Fiji."
Police said the syndicate was worrying because necessary tourist dollars remained in the overseas country where the sale was made.
Crimes being investigated include tax evasion, operating an unregistered business, contravening visa conditions.
"This will take some time but we hope to wrap it up soon as it has been ongoing for several months now."
